Mexico. The movement of containers last year to September amounted to 2’700,000 TEUs (boxes of 20 and 40 feet) above the figure achieved in 2008 for the same period.

The port sector shows considerable dynamism, and the proof is the average annual growth of containerized cargo between 1994 and 2009, of nearly 9.0%, according to a statement from the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT).

The unit said that with global economic recovery, ports of Mexico exhibit encouraging signs of strengthening and to end this year are expected high historic figures in the movement of containers and number of cruise passengers.

'In Mexico, signs of recovery in the sector are very encouraging: the port movement (including oil) from January to September 2010 exceeded 12.8% against the recorded during the same period last year,' SCT added.

On the other hand, the number of cruise passengers between January and September 2010 was 34.6% higher than the one recorded last year, and almost 10% higher than the same period in 2008.
