Mexican tourist industry stakes to trade fairs and conventions development to be one of the most important activities in generating foreign exchange for the country.
This kind of tourism not only increases the rate of hotel occupancy, but also tourist expenditure with multiplier effects on the economy, said Miguel Torruco Marques, president of the National Tourism Confederation (CNT).
He said that in 2009 in Mexico were held 112 international conferences, which generated revenues of $309 million dollars, while spending per tourist was almost six times more, compared to other segments.
Torruco noted that 65% of hotel occupancy in Mexico City is associated with the organization of events, fairs and congresses, a situation that is also reflected in other cities like Monterrey and Guadalajara.
Considering these data, the CNT has among its goals to develop a competitive destination, able to place Mexico City between world’s 15 cities selected by foreign capital to develop this type of tourism, and so repositioned in the market.
Mexico has a world-class infrastructure comprised of hotels, international airports, 71 convention centers and fairgrounds, which this year will increase with the opening of three new, said Torruco.
The executive concluded that the lack of creativity and political will in some cases affected the sharp drop that Mexico had in the world ranking, going from ninth in 1994 to 18th in 2008. (Editorial) Commerce
