Hotel occupancy during the current summer holiday period in Mexico measured in the last week of July, grew 4.5% in beach destinations and 4.4% in cities, compared to the same period last year, reported the Secretariat Tourism (SECTUR).
Among beach destinations, of which Mexico gets most of its tourism revenue, said hotel occupancy reached in the Riviera Maya (85%), followed by Mazatlan (82%), Cancun (74%), Nuevo Vallarta (73%), Puerto Vallarta (72%), Ixtapa (69%), Huatulco (68%) and Manzanillo (66%).
In Cancun, the annual growth was of 8.8% and the Riviera Maya the number of occupied rooms increased 6.5% compared to July 2010, the agency said in a statement.
The results are due to tourist 'diversification strategy' of Mexican authorities and the dynamism of domestic tourism, which 'remains one of the main drivers of this activity,' said the Undersecretary of Tourism Planning Ricardo Anaya.
Meanwhile, the number of occupied rooms in the cities of the country grew 4.4% in the same period.
The cities that reached the highest hotel occupancy rates were Pachuca (52.6%), Hermosillo (41.4%), Xalapa (33.5%), Campeche (23.2%), Tlaxcala (21.4%), Villahermosa (20.7%), San Luis Potosi (20.3%), Oaxaca (16.3%), Leon (9.7%) and Chihuahua (9.6%).
